Why is my nonstick pan stinking?

There are a few reasons why your non-stick skillet could stick. The first and most common is that metal tools were used on the forehead. The metal is extremely abrasive to the synthetic coating and causes scratches that can flake it off. Avoid using rubber or wooden tools when cooking on unpasted cookware.

Another reason may be that it has not been cleaned and that food particles are sufficiently built up to cover the non-stick coating. We recommend cleaning your pots and pans after each use.

It could also be that the pan or pan was used over a high heat, causing the coating to collapse and become sticky. For more information on why this happens, see the questions above.

How do non-stick pans work?
The science of non-stick technology was discovered in the 1930s and has since been used for countless things. The non-stick coating is a PTFE polytetrafluoroethylene – a synthetic (lab-made) polymer with extremely high cohesive forces and extremely low adhesion forces. Continuous forces connect molecules together – represent a drop of water on a vertical window pane, coherent forces hold it in this shape. Adhesives are the forces that hold the drop of water to the window. Since PTFE is strongly cohesive and weakly adhesive, nothing can cling to it; There is no friction for other molecules to adhere to. As a result, food and liquids simply slip out of the surface without sticking.
